The Mass Distribution of Extra-solar Giant Planets and Spectroscopic-binary Low-mass Companions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Spectroscopic orbits have been reported for nine unseen companions orbiting solar-type stars with minimum possible masses in the range 0.5 to 10 Jupiter masses. We compare the mass distribution of these nine planet candidates with the distribution of low-mass secondaries in spectroscopic binaries and nd that they present two distinctive distributions. The borderline between the two populations might be at the range of 10{30 Jupiter masses.

Terrestrial Planet Formation in Extra-Solar Planetary Systems
Terrestrial planets form in a series of dynamical steps from the solid component of circumstellar disks. First, km-sized planetesimals form likely via a combination of sticky collisions, turbulent concentration of solids, and gravitational collapse from micron-sized dust grains in the thin disk midplane. Second, planetesimals coalesce to form Moonto Mars-sized protoplanets, also called “planeta...
متن کاملDerivation of the Mass Distribution of Extrasolar Planets with MAXLIMA - a Maximum Likelihood Algorithm
We construct a maximum-likelihood algorithm MAXLIMA, to derive the mass distribution of the extrasolar planets when only the minimum masses are observed. The algorithm derives the distribution by solving a numerically stable set of equations, and does not need any iteration or smoothing. Based on 50 minimum masses, MAXLIMA yields a distribution which is approximately flat in logM , and might ri...
متن کاملChemical analysis of 8 recently discovered extra - solar planet host stars
ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Chemical analysis of 8 recently discovered extra-solar planet host stars ⋆ Abstract. We present the chemical analysis of a new set of stars known to harbor low mass companions, namely In addition, we have also analyzed HD 13445 and HD 75289, already studied elsewhere. The abundances of C and α-elements O, S, Si, Ca and Ti are presented and discussed in the context of ...
متن کاملMaximum-likelihood method for estimating the mass and period distributions of extra-solar planets
We investigate the distribution of mass M and orbital period P of extra-solar planets, taking account of selection effects due to the limited velocity precision and duration of existing surveys. We fit the data on 63 planets to a power-law distribution of the form dn = CM−αP−β(dM/M)(dP/P ), and find α = 0.12 ± 0.10, β = −0.26 ± 0.06 for M ∼< 10MJ, where MJ is the Jupiter mass. The correlation c...
متن کاملStellar Mass Dependent Disk Dispersal
We use published optical spectral and IR excess data from nine young clusters and associations to study the stellar mass dependent dispersal of circumstellar disks. All clusters older than ∼3Myr show a decrease in disk fraction with increasing stellar mass for Solar to higher mass stars. This result is significant at about the 1σ level in each cluster. For the complete set of clusters we reject...
